"The spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions. The nearer we get to Him, the more intensely missionary we become." -Henry Martyn InterVarsity in the Rockies wants to give every student an opportunity to learn more about God's heart for the world through short-term mission opportunities in the summer. As Hudson Taylor said, "the great commission isn't an option to be considered; rather a command to be obeyed."
Kenya Global Project: Kenya is located in a region known as East Africa. It is a country of striking contrasts and incredible diversity; conspicuous wealth can be seen side-by-side with desperate poverty. Increasing urbanization and technology, widespread corruption, crime, large numbers of refugees, one of the highest rates of population growth in the world, a majority population under the age of 15, and a high incidence of HIV are creating spiritual, economic and social challenges.
Kenya has a strong history of missionary outreach, though there are still many unreached people-groups within its borders. Christianity in Kenya is the predominant religion, though much of it has been described as "a mile wide and an inch deep." English and Kiswahili are the national languages, though many still speak their tribal languages exclusively. Thailand Global Project: Beautiful. Majestic. Enchanting. Warm. Hospitable. Sad. Dark. Oppressed. Hopeless. All these words can describe Thailand and its people. When you first arrive in Thailand, you will find an exterior of beauty and hospitality—a land of smiles. You will be amazed at what you see and comforted by the people you meet. Soon, however, you will begin to see a land darkened by sin, from the emptiness of Buddhism to the thriving sex-tour industry. Most of the 63 million people in Thailand are Buddhist, with a growing Muslim population. Many of Thailand’s problems stem from its transformation from an agrarian culture to an urban one; 14% of Thailand’s economy is produced solely by the sex industry. Begin to pray now for God’s Kingdom to come more fully in Thailand! Lima, Peru Urban Trek: Lima is the capital (and largest city) of Peru. Though the population is constantly growing, it is estimated that 11 to 12 million people reside in Lima. Political and economic instability during the latter half of the twentieth century created unprecedented poverty and violence in the rural highlands, forcing thousands of campesinos (peasant farmers) to migrate to Lima looking for work and a better life.
Today, more than one-third of Lima’s population live in shantytowns, locally known as pueblos jóvenes, many of which lack basic services as electricity and running water. There continues to be widespread underemployment in Peru and 54% lives under the poverty line. Salt Lake City Summer Internship: The SLC Internship is for those want to grow in the following ways: 1. Those who want to learn how to share the gospel in a culture different than their own. 2. Great training for those going overseas to do evangelism. 3. Those who have friends or family that are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), and you want to learn how to share God's love with them in helpful ways.
The SLC Internship will place strong emphasis on the Biblical basis for cross-cultural ministry and the "do's" and "don'ts" of sharing the gospel cross-culturally. We will spend many hours every week in LDS contexts, talking, learning, and sharing our lives with those who profess to be LDS. Bear Trap Ranch: The InterVarsity Crew and Internship Program at Bear Trap Ranch offers college students or recent college graduates a unique and challenging opportunity to learn what it means to live, work, and grow together in community. Are you ready for a new environment? Eager for God to do a new work in your life? Willing to work, serve, live, laugh, and worship together? Consider Bear Trap!
Bear Trap is a mix of a rugged mountain setting, cozy log cabins, invigorating cool fresh air, home baked bread, a place of reflective walls and great times of community. Our recreation changes with the seasons, from hiking to snow shoeing, volleyball to broomball, horse rides to tubing runs.
